It was a full moon. Neely had almost reached the top of the stairs before she caught sight of the huge orb through the trees, so bright it was almost silver. Normally, she would have noticed the glowing night sky as she was driving, but she’d been busy chatting with her sisters. Once she’d dropped them off, her thoughts had been consumed with this.

“Promise me you’ll do it,” Vi had said, leaning her head back in the car for one last goodbye and a final bossy suggestion.

“Vi, my sex life is none of your business.”

“No, but you’re my sister, and I want you to be happy. Trust me on this, you should go to him.”

“I promise to think it over,” Neely had prevaricated. In all honesty, the decision had been made as they’d waited for the check. A couple had come in, young and smiling, choosing to sit on the same bench instead of across from each other in their booth. With the passion they’d radiated, Neely was surprised they hadn’t glowed as brightly as tonight’s moon. Looking at them had made her eager to get to Robert. Love wasn’t just for the young.

Truthfully, her first experiences, back in college, had been awkward. In addition to feeling shy, she hadn’t been able to shake the guilt that Beth Mason would kill her if she’d known what her daughter was doing at that moment. And things had ended so wretchedly with Daniel. She’d been suckered in by his “bad boy” appeal without realizing he was indeed a bad boy, quick to throw her aside when he was ready for a new challenge. She’d still been trying to cope with the breakup when she overheard him at a party, laughing about her sexual ineptitude with a drinking buddy.

For a long time after that, sex hadn’t been something she looked forward to. In more recent relationships, it had been pleasant and she’d grown more confident in herself, but she’d also been able to compartmentalize her lovers, not dwell on them when she wasn’t with them. Robert had crept into every area of her life.

Because he was such a demonstrative man, he was an incredible lover. Vi might tease Neely about her age, remind her that her breasts weren’t getting any perkier with time, but Robert didn’t care. He’d seen her naked for the first time a few months ago, and he’d seemed pretty damn happy with her. His appreciation helped her tap an inner, very female power, she realized as she reached his doorstep. Heady stuff that left her feeling sensual and, tonight, possessive. This man was hers. If she rarely knew how to tell him that, she could try to show him.

She’d arrived in a state of nearly euphoric longing, her courage bolstered by a few drinks and her sisters’ encouragement. Now that she was actually knocking on the door, she wondered if he’d turned in for the night. It wasn’t unthinkably late, but it was no longer early, either.
